They’d go to college. They’d come home. They had pop-in NBA 2K9 — the 2009 edition of the NBA-based video sport — and could ball online. Five-on-five virtual games. On the weekends, same thing. Perform all weekend. Bucket after bucket. Sometimes they would work 9 to 5. Come home, log into NBA 2K and match. Again and again. Day daily.

It turned out to be a competitive period with hundreds of thousands competing online. Shaka, whose handle was”YoungSparks92,” saw somebody climbing the ranks with him. Both New Yorkers were connected together afterward. Little did they know that almost a decade later they would be competing side by side for the Utah Jazz in a professional league for NBA 2K gamers.

See, in the time, it was all about positions. They climbed the ladder up. Shaka had the bragging rights — always ahead of Lotty. When Lotty discovered both NBA 2K stars climbed up in the Exact Same area of Mount Vernon, New York. He knew he needed to fight him. 1 game to pick bragging rights for town and 2K. They went to different high schools, therefore it was not like they could join by themselves.

Shaka wanted the opportunity to play Lotty one . He knew he was a better player than him, even though they were always neck-and-neck at the competitive positions. He simply needed the moment to prove it. They played a hard-fought game. The match was close, but Shaka won by 10 or so.

Later that night, both competitors — that had never met until there — ended up going to the movies. Fast forward over a decade and the two are still side by side, teaming together on Jazz Gaming, the Utah Jazz affiliate to the NBA 2K League. “When we found out that we were from precisely the same neighborhood and we were both on top of the planet, like, wow, that’s mad we need to start hanging out and talking about the sport to kind of learn from each other,” Shaka said. “And then we just became teammates after that.”
